Mugging v.3 by takara13 Mugging v.3 by takara13
My small tribute to . A truly gifted deviant, a really nice guy, and a new daddy.

Some of you may remember the lineart from a couple of months back. Much fewer of you saw and commented on the WIP of this coloring job that I posted in my scraps a couple of days ago. For those who did, I tried my best to follow all useful advice....honest! More shinyness for the Midget, I tried to smooth up the lines and shadow transitions for AE, I changed the hair highlights for Beckers, and Wes...mate, I dunno what the hell I did when I locked in the original lines, but I couldn't erase it or paint that finger in a different position without still being able to see the old lines. *slams head on desk* Regardless of what I did or didn't do in this picture, I'm still pretty happy with it. I will be doing another Red Doll Army fanart sometime soon, because they're just such fun characters to work with. Maybe by the time I do the next one, I'll have the hang of digital painting/airbrushing. *crosses fingers*

Please feel free to be honest with your opinions on this, peoples! I cannot learn to improve if you cannot tell me what I'm doing wrong, yes? "Advanced Critique Encouraged" is activated, but any and all comments are muchly loved and greatly appreciated! Thanks! :blowkiss:

Red Doll Army character is *augustc4.
Original sketch, lineart, and colors by yours truly. :peace:

Finally getting a chance to comment on this!!!

Ok, is this you getting used to the tablet???? Damn chick, you're doing great! It took me so long to get the hang of mine at first, but now I can't work without it!

The pose is really creative and cute, and I like the different in line width that you use in a couple of places.

You're doing great work here, definitely keep it up!

Alright. Advanced critique it is, then. :D

As always, the pose is very dynamic, and I think the whole business with the phone is very original. The colors are great too, and if I may say so, I think your progress is very impressive - I love the hair.

There are a couple of problems here and there. The thumb is too long and the other fingers are too short. I know what you were trying to do here, but it doesn't really look like a normal human hand. I would like to give you some advice, but for the life of me, I can't draw hands, so you should probably take that with a grain of salt.
The most surprising element is that once again, the face is slightly asymetrical. One eyes is lower than the other one. I wonder why it happens to you so regularly. Maybe you should try and draw the skull underneath the face. No matter how cartoony or stylized a character is, you can always use its skeleton to get the anatomy just right. Anyway, it's not as if it ruined the drawing or anything like that. Just my :twocents:

Fantastic crit, Julien! Thank you so much, honey.
Yeah, I guess I should start doing that. This isn't the first time the eye thing has plagued me, is it? The thumb is not a thumb, but the pointer finger. The thumb is on the button on the other side...unseen. But I see why people are thinking that way. These are all great points that I'll be thinking about on my next piece. And thanks again on the glorious crit, my dear. You started out with positives, and then pointed to the things that need work. Useful things along with resolutions to those problems. Fantastic!

Well, either way, if it's the thumb, it's out of proportion, if it's the pointer finger, it isn't where it's supposed to be. But you know, I talk, I talk, and I know perfectly well that I would NEVER attempt to draw something like that, because I can't draw fingers! So, yeah, great work! ;)

^_^ The highlighting looks great, senpai.
The smooth shadows fit really well with your style. :3

Based on your pencil-shading style, though, I'd try experimenting with shadow-depth? It helps to play with your opacity and flow and all. :3

Hey you added a fre more colors and highlights, awesome job. If your really interested in fell shading. This is what I suggest, it's just unpostable unless you want people screaming at you :stab:! Alright, find some cool cess shaded art, and replicate it the best you can. Find the diffrences and improve from it. It sounds cheap, but you learn the best from others.

P.S. I'm not a big fan of the red doll army. I jsut don't see how they could survive in the snow like that, even a jacket would work.

Thanks, Chris! I'll certainly give it a try. Can't hurt, right? ;)
As far as the practicality of the RDA uniforms, one of his postings of them tells why they are that way. The whole thing started as an exercise in contrasts. The cool colors of the snow around them vs. the warm colors of the uniform, the scantness of the uniform vs. the harsh conditions, etc. It was all in fun. Besides, he's still a nice guy.

Well, now... I don't know how much I can add, several things, both good and bad, have already been pointed out. I suppose I'll start by saying that this is indeed a very nice drawing/coloring job... one nice thing about reading other peoples' comments is that they can point out things that might otherwise have been unappreciated (for instance, the attention to detail regarding clothing textures).

As usual, full-view brings a few things to light. In this drawing, there are two things that bug me just a little. One is her ear. It seems really thin to me. However, I'm not very familiar with the RDA characters, and since most anime-style characters don't have visible (or human) ears, I'd say it's a great attempt... ears are very hard to draw! The other thing I want to mention is the phone. This might just be the engineer in me, but that phone makes no sense! The camera/mic aren't facing her (though who knows, maybe she's taking her picture in the mirror?), and the image display is on the outer screen... and even if that's intentional, it'd be upside down when she closed the phone! I understand that you wanted to show that she was taking a picture of herself on her phone, but I would have recommended showing the inside screen of the phone with her picture, so that even though the camera part wouldn't have been visible, I think the viewer could figure it out.

Enough nitpicking! It's still a great picture (and of course, sexy too), even an engineer can tell that. :)

Ha! I should've known you'd catch it, Ted! Only one other person has said anything about it, and she told me through MSN. Indeed it is a HUGE goof, but either nobody wants to tell me, or nobody has noticed! Either way, how cool is that? :lmao:
Yeah, ears have always given me trouble. I usually try and cover them up. I'll definitely be doing another RDA picture in the future, and plan to utilize all the wonderful advice that's been given on this one. Thanks for looking it over for me, hon. And if you think my version is hot, you really need to take yourself over to Ben's page and see what they really look like! O_O

Hmm, perhaps I shall, when I get back from my job-interview training thingy (yes, again... I figure it can't hurt to practice!).

I wouldn't worry too much about the phone... I believe there are actually phones that have the functionality to display images like that, though I don't think they're sold in the U.S. Americans don't take care of their phones well enough to have an exposed OLED screen on the outside. )

Yes, I realize how inexpensive they are. Trouble is, every time I've almost saved up for something (anything), it seems something else more important comes up, and I have to use it. I figure at this rate, I'll have all the electronic toys the rest of you do, just in time for them to become obsolete. :lmao:
